Testing the tactility of the mechanisms was as important as how well they worked; as such, much of the development was spent making models of individual parts and tweaking them until they felt right. Once we had developed the form and obtained our first photos (after many disappointing trips to the film developers) we worked with several specialist companies to produce the final prototypes.  Following the show we decided to further develop the camera and address some of the issues with the first model. Each component has been tweaked or overhauled to make the camera suitable for mass production and more refined in its operation. One of the major improvements was removing the requirement for adhesives during assembly. Using Jesmonite (a gypsum-based resin) as a core material, I experimented with ratios and filler compounds, such as graphite, to see how they influenced strength, surface finish and tactility. A Photo-etched stainless steel plate patterned to reference the filler material is used as a strike strip. These constraints heavily influenced the overall size and behaviour of the dock. Whilst there were several obvious ways to wind the cable, each required the overall diameter of the dock to increase to an unacceptable size. Graphite powder was used as a secondary filler in each of the pots to influence how they felt to touch. Known for its lubricating properties, the graphite created a silky smooth outer surface and improved the overall feel of the stone-like qualities you get from unfilled Jesmonite. Adjusting the ratios of the powders was required as another property of graphite (an allotrope of carbon) is its ability to absorb a high quantity of liquid relative to its volume- this resulted in issues when mixing the liquid jesmonite prior to casting. The silicone bungs used to seal each pot are made using a four-part aluminium tool. The polished surface produces a clear, blemish free part which acts as a window to check how many matches are left.
